A Choice Modelling Survey of Community Attitudes to Improvements in Environmental Quality in NSW Catchments AgEcon
Mazur, Kasia; Bennett, Jeffrey W..
The survey was designed to estimate environmental values suitable for integration into MOSAIC, a bio-economic model for catchment and farm level planning. Local residents, as well as distant rural and distant urban communities, were surveyed in three NSW catchments (Lachlan, Namoi and Hawkesbury-Nepean) using choice modelling (CM). The survey aimed to find out respondents’ attitudes about, and preferences for, potential natural resource management (NRM) improvements. In total, 3,997 responses were collected from seven different locations in NSW. Fourteen split samples were established to allow for testing of incentive compatibility in CM, the impact of respondent location on values held, and scale effects. This research report describes the development...

In the Hungarian agriculture private farms have a determining role. Since Hungary has became a European Union member country, in certain markets the performance and efficiency of these private farms are directly matched with the agronomics of other member countries. Considering this competitive situation when assessing private economies that are traditionally agricultural, based on a survey with personal interview and questionnaire the research focused on what characterizes the production structure of farms, which parameters describe equipment supply, as even so how the efficiency of soil, technical equipment and capital, which are the relevant resources of the agricultural production. Willingness of cooperation was also researched, focused on not only...

A MEZŐGAZDASÁGI VÁLLALATI GAZDASÁGTAN FEJLŐDÉSE ÉS A MAI GYAKORLAT AgEcon
Szekely, Csaba.
The development of Hungarian agricultural business economics and management used to evolve in accordance with international leaders of the sector. On the other hand, a paradox situation has emerged in Hungary in the last two decades, in which such knowledge is only partially applied as a consequence of insufficient knowledge transfer and highly restructured agriculture. In the framework of an EU-6 research project, reviewing the agricultural risk management practices of some EU Member States, including Hungary, became possible. The study highlights those issues that are the most characteristic in terms of the level of information, management, marketing and finance. As a conclusion, it can be stated that the level of management of Hungarian agricultural...

A Survey of Greek Agricultural E-Markets AgEcon
Manouselis, Nikos; Konstantas, A.; Palavitsinis, N.; Costopoulou, Constantina; Sideridis, Alexander B..
The role that information technology plays in today’s business activities has led to an increase in firms using and/or deploying e-markets online. This development undoubtedly affects the agri-food sector, since a large number of agricultural firms are demonstrating or are expected to demonstrate e-commerce activities. This paper aims to provide an overview of the current status of agricultural e-markets in Greece, by presenting results from an analysis of 100 cases. Results indicate that Greek e-markets may still have a rather low degree of sophistication, but they demonstrate a strong B2B orientation, as well as an outreach for international customer bases.

Abundance and species richness of Coreoidea (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) from Parque Estadual do Turvo, Southern Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Barcellos,Aline; Schmidt,Letícia S.; Brailovsky,Harry.
The coreoid fauna from Neotropics is poorly known, especially in terms of community studies. Aiming at contributing to this knowledge, a two-year study was carried out at Parque Estadual do Turvo, Municipality of Derrubadas, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, to evaluate the composition, abundance and species richness of Coreoidea. Samplings were conducted in the springs of 2003 and 2004 (October), and autumns of 2004 and 2005 (May), using beating tray method, along two trails of the park. Sampling effort (hours X collectors) totaled 153h. A total of 282 individuals of Coreoidea were collected, distributed in 28 species of Alydidae, Coreidae and Rhopalidae. The most abundant species was the coreid Cebrenis supina Brailovsky, representing 16% of the...

Agricultural Price Seasonality and Market Failure: Examining the Net Seller Household and the Net Benefit Ratio Definition AgEcon
Vergez, Antonin.
On the basis of a household typology distinguishing between net sellers, net buyers and self sufficient, the Net Benefit Ratio (NBR), defined by Deaton (1989), is used to approximate households' first order welfare variations when price change. In this paper, we discuss both the typology's criteria and the classic formula of NBR, since they are based a) on produced and consumed quantities rather than real marketed volumes and b) on a unique selling and buying price for all surveyed households. We propose another definition of a net seller and a new NBR expression allowing the analyst to take into account market failures (MF) and price seasonality (PS), which are two constancies in developing countries. We use two sets of data (from Mexico and Mali), to...

Agricultural Production Survey Frames: Changes over time, issues, and challenges AgEcon
Watt, Jean.
New Zealand has a long history of producing official statistics on agricultural, horticultural, and forestry production. Having a good population or survey frame is a key factor enabling the collection and production of quality statistics. Several population frames have been used over time for agricultural production censuses and surveys. These include land based frames, administrative registers, farmer and grower lists, and combinations of these. This paper discusses the frame currently used and earlier frames and associated challenges, including: the transition from a land based to administrative frame, coverage issues, frame updating, and issues when comparing statistics based on different frames. The paper discusses frames used for the production of...

An improved bait method for collecting hymenoptera, especially social wasps (Vespidae: Polistinae) Neotropical Entomology
Noll,Fernando B; Gomes,Bruno.
In this work, an alternative method for the capture of neotropical social wasps is described, which may supplement or replace the procedures commonly used in wasp surveys. The method was tested in a seasonal semideciduous forest in the northwest of São Paulo State, collecting a larger number of species and a greater abundance of social wasps and of other Hymenoptera than other methods also used in the same area, namely Malaise traps, bottle traps and meat baits. The proposed method was adapted from Wille (1962) who used an attractive solution based on water and honey for bee attraction. In here, the attractive solution was based on water, salt and crystal sugar, and was effective in attracting bees and solitary wasps, but mainly social wasps, which is the...

Análise do grau de restritividade de exigências técnicas às exportações brasileiras AgEcon
Faria, Rosane Nunes de; Burnquist, Heloisa Lee.
The objective of this investigation was to evaluate to what degree technical requirements restrict Brazilian exports, based on a survey applied to 77 firms. The variables represented six types of technical measures that are usually imposed upon exported products. To facilitate the interpretation of the results, factorial analysis was used to reduce the number of variables involved. This allowed the construction of two indicators of the degree of restrictiveness of the technical barriers focused by the study. These were an indicator of requirements of technical specification (ITS) and an indicator for information and label requirements (IIL). Descriptive statistics and paired t test showed that the firms surveyed considered the ITS more restrictive to their...

ASSESSING THE DEGREE OF FOOD INSECURITY IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: A PILOT PROJECT AgEcon
Bezuneh, Mesfin; Yiheyis, Zelealem; Del Rosario, Pedro-Juan; Ortiz, Luis.
The concept of food insecurity at the household and individual levels has been an area of extensive research in the late 1980s by individual researchers and public agencies. This work culminated in the development of the US Food Security Survey Module (FSSM), which is now seem to be the standard methodology of determining household food’s security status, at least in countries with developed economies. One of the purposes of this study is to adapt the FSSM in the context of a less developed economy, and thereby assess the prevalence of food insecurity and hunger. The module was administered as a pilot in a household survey of 110 low-income families in the Dominican Republic. This study found that 93% of the respondent were food-insecure, some more so...

Bait traps remain attractive to euglossine bees even after two weeks: a report from Brazilian Atlantic forest Rev. Bras. entomol.
Coswosk,Judson Albino; Soares,Elaine Della Giustina; Faria,Luiz R.R..
ABSTRACT Bait traps are effective and commonly used method in the studies of orchid bees. Important questions in the context of this method, including those related to bait dispersion, how long baits remain attractive, the distance from which males are supposed to be attracted to lures and so on, are still open subjects. Data on the attractiveness of bait traps that have remained in the field during two weeks in a large Atlantic forest preserve are presented. Four main results emerge from the data: (i) the abundance of specimens collected per day decreased in all the attractants as the traps were left on the field; (ii) despite this decrease, the absolute number of individuals collected after eight and fifteen days is remarkably, mostly in eugenol and...

Bilan des perturbations phytoplanctoniques observées sur les côtes françaises en 1986 ArchiMer
Belin, Catherine; Berthome, Jean-paul.
In 1986, 23 discolored waters were observed ; dinoflagellates often were the cause of them. Many developments of Prorocentrum minimum occured ; two of them were associated with shel1fishes mortalities. At contrary, other species which are suspected to be toxic for shellfishes, as Gyrodinium aureolum and Gyrodinium spirale, have not been associated with mortalities, although they have been observed in several areas. The developments of Dinophysis (cf. acuminata or sacculus) caused provisional prohibitions of shellfishes selling, especially in the south of Brittany. Another specie was also implicated in toxicities : Prorocentrum lima. Human intoxications and economic consequences were rather important.

A 3-year survey was made of several biological markers in mussels (Mytilus edulis) exposed in situ to the oil that came ashore after the wreck of the "Erika" tanker on the Brittany (France) coast in December 1999. The mussel response was assessed using a set of 7 biomarkers, most of them related to the metabolism of organic contaminants. After a series of validation tests, data was evaluated for only 5 biomarkers: acety1cholinesterase (AChE), glutathione S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA) and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) adducts. No significant reductions in GST or CAT levels were observed, levels of DNA adducts and MDA were high during the 6 months immediately following the accident and levels of AChE were significantly lower during...

Boll weevil within season and off-season activity monitored using a pheromone-and-glue reusable tube trap Scientia Agricola
Neves,Robério Carlos dos Santos; Torres,Jorge Braz; Barros,Eduardo Moreira; Vivan,Lúcia Madalena.
ABSTRACT: The boll weevil colonizes cotton fields as early as cotton squaring, causing significant losses due to feeding and protected development inside fruiting structures throughout crop phenology. Successful control depends on control of adults and their accurate detection when they colonize the crops. The commercial trap and boll weevil attract-and-control tubes (BWACT) are the only available tools to monitor and attract-and-kill boll weevil, despite limitation in efficacy, and insecticide in BWACT is not allowed in organic production. A grandlure-and-glue reusable and insecticide-free tube (GGT) made with polyvinyl chloride tube, smeared with entomological glue, and lured with pheromone was tested to detect boll weevil activity across various...

Characteristics of environmentally conscious production behaviour in agricultural waste management AgEcon
Kormosne-Koch, Krisztina.
When measuring environmentally conscious behaviour and determining its variables, focus often lies only on consumers, but environmental conservation requires not only the consumers’ but also the producers’ input. After defining environmentally conscious behaviour, I utilized the market research method to determine how participating in agri-environmental programs and subsidies affects producers’ environmental consciousness and waste management behaviour. The research result indicates that participation in agri-environmental programs develops producers’ environmental sensitivity, and improves their environmentally conscious behaviour, and this even holds true for waste management, which is not directly not subsidized by the programs.

INTRODUCTION: The Dover Strait (Figure 1) connects the North Sea to the English Channel. Here, northern France and South-East England are at their closest. This narrow corridor, one of the world's busiest straits for maritime shipping, is a key economic area for numerous activities, such as leisure and tourism, international ports and shipping, plus the exploitation of living or abiotic marine resources. This area is a significant resource for fisheries because many commercial fish species are abundant there, but also because of the presence of nursery and spawning areas and migratory routes linked to specific environmental characteristics. The vulnerability of these resources, which are subjected to strong anthropogenic pressures, has brought together...
